Operation Downbird

Two teams of five Year 9 girls headed off to RNAS Culdrose yesterday to partake in the annual Lockheed Martin STEM Activity.  Students were given a scenario where a Merlin Helicopter with classified documents on board had total loss of power whilst flying 30 miles into enemy territory.  The students were asked to design a portable crane system to recover the Merlin onto a trailer. Working in Hangar E1, with the backdrop of two £50m Merlins being worked on by Culdrose staff, the students set about designing and making a structure, gearing and control system, to lift a scale model. ...

Student Progress Data

We are pleased to inform parents and carers that the latest student progress data for Years 7 – 10 is now available to view online, through our Parent Portal, Pupilinfo.   Once logged in parents will be able to view student targets, the most recent teacher predicted grades and attitude to learning grades.  Where students are below target, there will be subject specific advice from teachers, which students should act upon to improve their progress.  If parents need a reminder of their login or password, please contact the College reception.  For parents with the MYEd app, there is a quick link to...

National STEM Challenge success!

We are delighted to announce that six of our students visited Humphry Davy School on Thursday, to compete in the National IET/Faraday STEM Challenge. The brief was to design and make a product, to improve crew or boat performance on GB's America's Cup Challenge - BAR Land Rover, which will be helmed by Sir Ben Ainslie.  The students used coding to program a BBC Microbit to monitor stress on the mast, and a training aid for the crew.  The students worked tirelessly throughout the day, and presented their idea 'Dragons Den' style, fending off some pretty fierce questions!  The team scored 95/100,...

We are pleased to announce that due to the excellent fundraising efforts of our students, the College raised over £1300 for Children in Need last Friday. Mrs Laban, Director of P16 was thrilled by the efforts of the Post 16 students, who in the space of 30 minutes, raised £120. Well done to all, and thank you for your time, effort and generosity....

Students' artwork displayed in local business

A selection of work created by our young artists has been displayed in the window of Randle Thomas solicitors. The display involves a selection of Year 12 photographs, as well as a large abstract painting by Year 13 BTEC Art student Ella Blatchford. There is also a selection of clay tiles created by our Year 8 students. These tiles were inspired by Van Gogh's landscape images. The artwork will be on display for the Helston Christmas lights switch on, and throughout the Christmas holidays. Merry Christmas from the Visual and Performing Arts faculty....

Gymnastics success for HCC student

We were delighted to hear that last Friday, Matthew Heaney competed in and won the National Grade Finals, as both an individual gymnast and as part of team. He competed at the Club Level 6 grade and came away with the individual gold medal and the team gold. This means he is the Club Level 6 National Champion and part of the National Champion team which is an incredible achievement. This has been Matthew's most successful year, as he now holds 4 titles for his age level: South West Champion, London Open Champion and the two titles he won on...

Dyslexia Revision Workshop

We recently hosted another revision workshop for parents of our KS4 students. The focus of the workshop was on revision strategies, which can help Dyslexic students with their exam preparation. The afternoon was hosted by our Dyslexia Champion Mrs Caroline Bloor and the County Dyslexia Adviser Jo Davidson. The afternoon was very well attended, with students and parents going home with new ideas and strategies to try out.  There will be further workshops coming up in the spring term.
