Christmas Jumper Day

Helston Community College held their version of Christmas Jumper Day a little later than the rest of the country, to coincide with their Christmas lunch, on Wednesday 17th December.  The driving force behind the day was Mrs Hocking’s 10H tutor group.  Mrs Hocking said ”They created posters to be displayed around the College, sent emails to the Heads of each Year group and ran assemblies in the week leading up to the event.  It was a great way for the students to give something back to the community as well as learn valuable life skills that underpin our College’s...

Great success for Year 7, within all aspects of Design and Technology

The Year 7’s have successfully completed their first 9 week rotation in Design Technology covering one of four disciplines; Catering, Engineering, Graphics or Resistant Materials, in which they have covered a breadth of skills in practical and theory. There has been great success within all aspects of the design and technology rotation, and the students have had a lot of fun being creative and learning new practical skills. In Resistant Materials, wooden salt & pepper pots were created, utilising practical skills such as laminating,machine sanding and drilling. Free Book for Year 7 students

Christmas came early for the Year 7 students at Helston Community College when books were handed out free of charge. Year 7 students were able to choose their own book to keep from seventeen titles provided by the College library. The librarians at the school were able to buy the books at a reduced price with funding provided by Bookbuzz. The students received their books which created a wave of enthusiasm across the whole year group. HCC Vocal Competition

Over the last three weeks, the music department have had the pleasure of listening to 38 students sing across all of the year groups. They then had the very difficult task of trying to whittle the entries down to twelve who would go through to perform in the Vocal  Recital Competitionon Tuesday 2nd December. With the chosen twelve singers picked, M1 was turned into a concert venue and filled with singers and their families ready to listen to some of the greatest singing talent Helston College has to offer. Year 8 students take to the Camel Trail to raise money for orphanage

After hearing of the Kisumu Orphanage’s plight, four Helston Community College students Lowenna Wearne, Freya Tatham, Beth Davies and Pepper Robertson decided they would like to support the Kisumu community by running the Camel Trail, Wadebridge to Padstow route on the 26th October. The girls were sponsored by two local companies and completed their run proudly wearing t-shirts which were provided by 'Endurance Life' a West Country business specialising in sporting events for elite athletes and the backs of the t-shirts were printed by Cornish based firm 'Southwest Flags' specialising in banners and flags. HCC students make fudge to send to troops away for Christmas this year

Boxes full of festive treats have set off from Cornwall to various destinations across the Globe today.  Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose is following a tradition carried out 100 years ago in WW1 and sending care packages to deployed personnel to let them know that they are being thought of at Christmastime. Culdrose based Sailors, Engineers and Aircrew currently serving on operations in the Gulf, the South Atlantic and helping the fight against Ebola in Sierra Leone will all receive parcels from the Helston based Air Station. Dyslexia Poster Competition

Helston Community College have been raising awareness of Dyslexia this term with  a poster competition for year 7 pupils. Tutors have been sharing videos and presentations in tutor time on the theme ‘Dyslexia Matters’ to coincide with Dyslexia Awareness week. Raising awareness of dyslexia at school is very important – we all have the opportunity to succeed and by recognising and supporting the learning difference we can all make steps to encouraging ambition and achievement for all.
