HCC County Champions

Monday 20th October 2014

The first win for HCC was on Tuesday 14th October, when the Year 11 Rugby team won the county ten a side tournament, organised by the Army. The boys had wins over Newquay Tretherras and Brannal Schools in the pool stages before beating Redruth in the semi finals, and winning a close final 12-5 against Pool school. Then it was the girls turn on Thursday, when they competed in the U16 girls hockey tournament, which was held at Richard Lander School. Friday afternoon saw a visit to Helston Community College from The Royal Naval WONS ( Warrant Officer Of Naval Service ) Steve Cass.  As an ex student of Helston Community College, Steve was drafted in by the Sixth Form Work Experience Co ordinator; Natalie Williams to give some potential Naval recruits a real insight into The Royal Navy and the interesting, dynamic career opportunities that the Navy can offer. Year 8 pupils running to support orphanage in Kenya

After hearing of the Kisumu Orphanage's plight, four Year 8 girls Lowenna Wearne, Freya Tatham, Beth Davies  and Pepper Robertson decided they would like to support the Kisumu community by running the Camel Trail, Wadebridge to Padstow route on the 26th October. The Kisumu Children's trust run the orphanage, and are dedicated to improving the lives of some of Kenya's poorest children.  They support them by having a children's home, support for children within the home and community development projects.  Their mission is to help those in greatest need to love and care, raise them in a Christian environment, educate...

Students invited to take part in the Children in Need Choir

Six pupils from HCC have successfully been chosen to take part in this year's BBC SW Children in Need Choir in Plymouth on Friday 14th November. The girls, who are all members of the Cornwall Girls Choir auditioned to get a place in the SW CIN Choir, and received a letter to confirm they had been selected to take part in this great charity event. Year 12 student wins prestigious award

On Thursday the 2nd October the College was again asked to attend the South West Apprentice of the year awards at the prestigious St Mellion International Resort in Saltash. This year's nominee was Robert Carter who won the Young Achiever of the Year Award which was sponsored by Cornwall Housing. Deputy Head Teacher Mr Wayne Jenkins read a citation; afterwards Robert was presented with the award from one of the companies' representatives. College’s Community Open Evening is a great success.

With a new year arrived and with a new Head Teacher at the helm,  the College opened its doors for its annual Community Open Evening  last week. The North Site Hall was packed for  Mrs Bryant's  key note addresses, which also included  speeches by  Head Boy; Blake Brown and  Head Girl; Francesca Wells. During the evening, visitors were shown around  the College by our new Year 7 students. Big Lottery Awards for All- Helston Young People 'it’s all about you!’

At the end of July the Helston Phoenix Project were informed that they had been awarded their third successful award of £9, 105. 00 from the Big Lottery Awards for All. The third one week project for the young people of Helston ran during the August holiday. The team, mentors, and volunteers are all trained in Safeguarding, Confidentially and Cornwall Fire and Rescue Health and Safety Procedures prior to the activity. Coffee and Cake for Charity

There was time for some truly scrumptious cakes on Friday at the Helston College Post 16 Centre.  Siobhan Owen in year 12, organised The Macmillan Coffee morning with some help from staff member Natalie Williams.  Lots of generous Post 16 students baked a variety of cakes and biscuits to help Siobhan raise a total of £120.05. The Sixth Form students are always keen to support any fundraising and welcomed the chance to show off their baking prowess. Primary School pupils visit the Construction Department at HCC

Tuesday 30th September 2014

Red Class from Halwin School visited Helston Community College recently as part of their Construction Project.  The aim of the visit was to see and have a go at construction activities.  The children were shown by Year 13 Construction students how to mix mortar and were also shown how to build cavity walls in brick and block. After a tour of the site and a tea break, they had a go themselves and worked with plenty of enthusiasm, using up all the allocated bricks and mortar very quickly.  Even the staff and helpers all joined in to have a go...
