Model Railway Exhibition

The Spring Model Railway Show will be held in the College on April 21st and 22nd (2018). Saturday 10.00am – 5.00pmSunday 10.00am – 4.00pm Admission: Adult - £5.00; Child u-16 - £3.00; Family (2+2) - £10.00; There will be around 15 working layouts and trade support including the Kernow Model Rail Centre & Aspire Gifts and Models. The College will collect any dontations for a local memorial project

Three of the College's former Teachers, Mike Thomas, Isabel and Johnny Austin have recently been working on a project to raise sufficient funds to place an oak memorial bench for another former teacher, Mr George Shutter. The plan is to place the memorial outside of St Michael's Church in Helston. To date, the project has raised a significant sum of money but they are still a little short of their target for the memorial. An exciting opportunity for Year 10 students.

The Cornwall Marine Network (CMN) and its Marine Academy have successfully secured funding for a 3-year project to collaborate with international partners and schools to facilitate access to marine activities for Year 10 pupils. By working with schools locally, partners aim to make more young people aware of the marine environment as a resource to protect and enjoy and as an exciting career path. Post 16 Students visit Watson Marlow

The Year 12 and 13 Tech Level students recently visited Watson Marlow, a market leading peristaltic pump company in Falmouth (They make the pumps which provide clean water to Falmouth, and the flavours to McDonalds thickshakes)! For their coursework, students have been recently been given a task of designing and making a handling device which can pick up a 50mm cube, move it 400mm, and lowered it onto a 100mm target square. Interact Beach Clean

Earlier in the week the Interact members braved the weather and went to Gunwalloe to help clear the beach of man-made waste. This self-organised beach clean was a huge success with eight bags of litter collected, and approximately 1000 pieces of plastic collected in just an hour. Today plastic is a huge issue as it's polluting the oceans, causing marine wildlife to suffer and ocean acidification. Students visit the University of Oxford

A number of students took part in an overnight trip to a Mathematics, Physics and Philosophy taster day held by the University of Oxford. The taster day is aimed at able students in year 11 looking at how computer science, physics, and mathematics all have one thing in common: philosophy. The day consisted of lectures and college tours, as well as advice on the Oxford application process. Speakers were University of Oxford lecturers and students. Students meet BBC2's Astronaut Competition winner

On Wednesday the 31st of January 47 students from Helston Community College went to Goonhilly Earth Station to listen to a talk from Dr Suzie Imber. Suzie is an associate professor in Planetary Science at the University of Leicester, as well as being the winner of the BBC 2 series "Astronauts: Do you have what it takes?" and a very accomplished mountaineer. Suzie spoke about her research in to the formation of the planet Mercury, and how her department are sending an instrument to the smallest planet in our solar system as part of a European Space Agency mission, Bepicolumbo....
