DofE students raise money for Children in Need

We are delighted to inform parents/carers that four Silver Duke of Edinburgh students took part in their Silver DofE Practice across Bodmin Moor. However, this expedition was no ordinary adventure because it was on the same weekend as the BBC Countryfile Ramble, which took place right across the country with the aim of raising money for Children in Need. Helston Community College Have Lift Off

Pupils from Helston Community College had a special visitor beamed into class recently to talk to them about space. Canadian astronaut Commander Chris Hadfield joined the lucky students for a 30 minute Skype interview session. The students from Year 7 to 11 had the opportunity to ask him a question each, with topics ranging from 'What is it like to sleep in space?', to 'Do you think it will be possible to inhabit Mars one day?' Operation Encompass

The College is taking part in a project that is being run jointly between schools across Cornwall and the Devon and Cornwall Police. Operation Encompass involves the reporting to schools, before the start of the next school day, when a child or young person has been exposed to or involved in, any domestic incident. Children in Need - THANKYOU!!

We would like to thank all those who were involved with Children in Need on Friday. The events led by the Post 16 students included a marketplace in which there was a Tombola, cake sales, a popcorn stall, name the teddy and a luxury hot chocolate with marshmallows stand. These events raised £200. The brave students and staff who volunteered for the wet sponges raised £50 and all in all, with the donations for the non-uniform day, the College raised just over £1500 for the charity. Battlefields Tour Competition

All students from years 7 to 13 are invited to enter a competition to have a chance of winning an exciting prize of a fully-funded English Literature trip to the First World War Battlefields in France and Belgium. There are only two places available. To enter the competition, students will need to research a Cornish person or place with a link to the WW1 and then write a piece of fiction (poetry, short story, short play, diary entry) based on their research. Helston Students commemorate Armistice Day

On Friday 10th November, at 10:50 all the students and staff held a two-minute silence to commemorate Armistice day and pay their respects to those who have died in conflicts around the world.
