P16 student is one of six in the country to gain Scholarship

Jake started his application to the Royal Navy in November of 2012, applying to become a Pilot under the Sixth Form Scholarship Scheme. The first hurdle for Jake was the Initial Psychometric tests, conducted at the Armed Forces Careers office in Redruth.  Jake gained his required score in these, and so went on to complete the Initial Fitness Test, which comprised of a 1.5 mile run.  Next, Jake sat a Sift Interview with a current serving officer, to assess his suitability to attend the Admiralty Interview Board.  Being successful at this, Jake's next challenge was to pass the Flying Aptitude...

Year 10 students experience a day at Culdrose

Six intrepid young Engineers were at Culdrose all day on the 10th June.  After a detailed briefing in the ops room where they were set to task of rescuing a grounded Merlin Helicopter from inside enemy territory.  A crane was required to lift the stranded Merlin onto the back of a low loader to allow it to return to base. Although this was a training exercise, the manner in which it was delivered gave it a real sense of what it is like in the services dealing with engineering problems. What a trip!

               On Wednesday 4th June, thirty six students and three members of staff started an adventure, a very early adventure, leaving school at 4am.  The group was off to London to the Science Museum in the morning and then a West End production in the afternoon. Upon arriving at the Science Museum, the very first exhibit we saw was Trevithick’s Steam Engine – which immediately made the group feel proud to be from Cornwall!  The party was split into three groups spending 2 ½ hours in the museum.  On the ground floor the students were inspired...

Keep Safe in the Sun

Post 16 students help promote the ‘Safe Sun’ campaign at Helston Community College. Cornwall has the highest figures for skin cancer in the UK. Students were given a free sachet of SPF50 sun cream and encouraged to answer the question: ‘what increases your risk of skin cancer by 50%? The answer was; Sunburn. All correct answers were put into a prize draw, the winning students received one of the following: hats, t shirts, SPF30 sun lotion and lip balm....

Year 11 students gain ILM Award

Three Year 11 students have recently achieved an extra curriculum Award through Cornwall College’s ‘Young Leaders Academy’. The Academy is designed to work as a partnership between Cornwall College and Cornish Secondary schools. They work together to identify, support and develop outstanding individuals and equip them with leadership and employability skills that will help them now and prepare them for the future. Helston College Gymnastics Team win the National Finals!

Five gymnasts from Helston Community College travelled to Stoke on Trent this weekend to compete in the British Schools Gymnastics Association National Finals: Matthew Heaney (Y7), Phoebe Jenkin(Y7), Maea Morgan(Y8), Shannon Standing(Y7) and Cameron Wheat(Y8) qualified for the nationals at the regional competition in Taunton in March. There were eight teams competing for the trophy with some excellent gymnasts. Helston College started on vault with Matthew Heaney scoring 15.35 for his squat through and Maea Morgan scoring 15.30 for her handspring and Phoebe Jenkin 15.15,Cameron Wheat 15.00 and Shannon Standing 14.85 very close behind. Andy wins at Two Moors International Festival

Year 10 student Andy Wingham is one of four winners announced by the Two Moors Festival organisers for their Young Musicians Platform, a prestigious classical music competition in the South West. The competition has been running since 2001 and this is the first time a cornet player has been amongst the winners. Following two rounds of auditions with over 50 very talented young musicians, the winners (including two cellists and a violinist) are invited to play a recital as part of the Two Moors Festival in October 2014, each receiving £250. Helston Phoenix Project
