Students form an 'Interact' club

A group of students have recently started an 'Interact' club here at Helston Community College. Interact is a youth run club developed by the Rotary Club. It is a group of likeminded students who meet during lunchtimes to raise money and help charities. Every year, Interact fundraises for a local and an international charity, improving the lives of those in the community and those in other countries that are less fortunate than ourselves. Bloodhound team in the national final

Wednesday 5th July 2017

Over the last few months some of our budding engineers from Helston Community College have been competing in the Bloodhound 'Race for the Line' project. The students had to design and build a rocket car out of Styrofoam to a strict set of regulations. The models were then raced using miniature rocket engines with the fastest team deemed the winners. Helston Community College managed to win the local and county competitions. This resulted in the team being invited to the national finals at Santa Pod raceway along with 29 other teams. On the 21st of June, a group of Year 9, 10 and 13 students went to the University of Exeter to attend The Big Bang Fair South West. This is a regional version of the national Science fair which takes place every year in March. As well as getting to meet and interact with a large number of companies and organisations involved in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), the students also presented their project investigating the effect of food additives on signalling in nerves. Post 16 construction students enjoy work experience in France

The College was delighted to receive glowing reports from the Cornwall Marine Network, who organised a two week work experience for our Post 16 construction students. The students did really well in their respective workplaces and their tutors were pleased by the fact that they showed motivation, were autonomous, willing to work hard and performed really well. The businesses would be pleased to offer similar placements in the future and thought having English students in the workplace for two weeks was also beneficial for their staff. The College would like to extend a warm invitation to the 'evening of classical music' this Wednesday at St Michael's Church. The event is free, and Helston Community College students will be performing a range of pieces including excerpts from: Faure's 'Requiem' Bernsein's 'West Side Story' Handel's 'Messiah' Vivaldi's Trumpet and Flute Concertos compositions by Gabrielli and Purcell.
