Youth Speaks 2016

On Wednesday 3rd February, the first round of the annual "Youth Speaks" public speaking competition took place at Helston Community College, organised and judged by the local Rotary club. Teams took part in both sections of the competition – Intermediate and Senior. Speech topics ranged from the need to protect our natural environment to the undeniable merits of the Cornish pasty! All the teams delivered excellent performances and gave the audience a great deal to think about. Safer Internet Day 2016

The College is joining hundreds of other organisations across the UK in celebrating Safer Internet Day and promoting the safe and responsible use of technology. To celebrate the day, Mrs Laura Hocking the college's E-safety and E-communications Manager hosted the upcoming singer, "Rich Cottell", for an Online Safety and Cyber Bullying themed visit for their PHSE day on 2nd February 2016. Helston College Gymnastics Team Through to National Finals

On Sunday 31st January three of the gymnasts from the Helston College Gymnastics Team travelled to Kinglsey School in Bideford for the South West Regional round of the Milano Teams Competition. It was a challenging competition with 16 under 16 girls teams from across the region. The Helston College Team included Shannon Standing (Y9), Phoebe Jenkin (Y9) and Maea Morgan (Y10). STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Challenge

On the 25th January, thirty for our most able students in Year 8 and 9 each took part in a 2 hour STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Challenge that took place in our College's D&T workshop. Each of the students completed the Shell sponsored 'Energy Quest Young Engineers Project' where they worked in small groups to design optimal fanblades for wind turbines and then energy efficient buggies which they raced!   The buggies' electric motors were powered by a capacitor, which was charged by their turbine design.  The aim of the challenge was to promote Engineering as a potential career...

Construction students revamp storage boxes for Constantine Pre-School

Staff and children at Constantine Pre-school have been showing off their "snazzy" new-look outdoor storage boxes which they only have thanks to Helston Community College construction students. Destined for a local recycling centre following a big clear-up in the autumn term, the rather dilapidated storage units were saved from the chop by construction teacher Mr Cummins. He saw the potential for a project to give to his year 10 and 11 pupils at College and whisked them away for a makeover.
