Secretary of State for Education visits HCC

On Thursday 12th March, Helston Community College received a visit from the Secretary of State for Education, Nicky Morgan. The Secretary of State took a tour of the College and dropped in to some extra-curricular sessions. She was delighted with our students, and highly complimentary about the provision at the College. She was able to drop in to a Most Able Science session, a primary transition class and saw the Jazz orchestra rehearsing. Today's solar eclipse will be a wonderful natural event, but it is also extremely dangerous if looked at without specialised eye protection. 1. Never look directly at the Sun. 2. Don't even look directly at the Sun through sunglasses or dark material, such as a bin liner or photographic negative. 3. Makeshift filters may not screen out the harmful UV that can burn the retina of the eye. Students who are not in an examination will have the opportunity to view the eclipse safely during an extended Tutor Period, with the event being shown on a screen by their Group...

'Live, Love, Dance': A Great Success for Helston Community College

'Live, Love, Dance': A Great Success for Helston Community College On Monday 9th March the GCSE and A Level Dancers at Helston Community College performed their examination work to friends and families. Guest dancers from Helston Youth Centre Dance Group also performed their new works ahead of their Plymouth Competition on Saturday 14th March. GCSE Dance pieces included technical Set Dance pieces performed with style and accuracy. Hockey Success

 Year 8 student Freya Tatham, a regular player for Helston Community College Hockey Team who also plays for Penzance Hockey Club, has been selected to have additional training as part of the English Hockey Board Development Programme. She has also been selected for 8 weeks of further training at the Regional Junior Academy Centre at Truro School, and has just been picked to play for Cornwall at Clifton College. Pendennis Super Yachts Design and Technology Trip

On the 25th of February, twelve Helston Community College 6th form students attended a tour of Pendennis Ship Yard with members of the Design and Technology Faculty. Tours were given by the Senior Engineer and Project Manager of the successful Cornish companies facilities. Throughout Pendennis' history, it has been presented with numerous awards; both for their projects and their  apprenticeship scheme, and are proud of their heritage spanning 25 years including over 200 refit projects and 30 custom build super yachts. Year 7 student wins Regional heat

Congratulations to Year 7 student Maia Roberts who has successfully won the Regional heat of the Rotary Club Young Musician competition. Maia played 'Syrinx' by Debussy. One of the judges commented after her performance on how 'tone perfect' her piece was. Maia will now go on to the district finals, which are being held in Truro in a few weeks' time....
