Year 8 and 9 students become restaurant critics for the day!

A group of Year 8 and 9 students have enjoyed an English enrichment opportunity. They became restaurant critics for a day, writing reviews of ‘The Cove’ at Maenporth. Post 16 IT students visit RNAS Culdrose

This year in place of the usual Merlin Training Centre, the students spent the first stop of their tour at the Thales simulator which provided an excellent insight into how the Royal Navy utilise ICT to implement all aspects of training, as well as allowing the students to view the hardware and software that supports the training. A highlight for some was the consolidation of this by the Flight Deck simulator where some of the group took control of landing a Merlin helicopter on the back of a moving aircraft carrier; not an easy job to do in changeable elements!...

Minister of State for Schools congratulates College on GCSE results

The College has been pleased to have received a letter from Mr Nick Gibb MP (Minister of State for Schools) congratulating our Staff and students upon their GCSE results over the last three years. He confirms that the College is: "...one of the top 100 non –selective state- funded schools in England showing the greatest sustained improvement in the percentage of pupils achieving five or more A* - C grades including English and mathematics GCSEs."...

Dyslexia workshop

Friday 12th February saw us host our second Dyslexia parental workshop. Forty parents joined us to learn more about techniques which help our dyslexia students to record and remember information - including mind mapping and visual thinking. The workshop was run by our Dyslexia Champion Mrs Caroline Bloor - assisted by Mrs Jude Carroll from the Cornwall dyslexia service. Parents are keen to continue with the group and we plan to run a ‘new parent ‘workshop in the Summer term. Thank you to students Evie, Ted, Ella, Lauren, Sam. Inter-Counties Cross Country Championship

A number of our students recently took part in the Inter-Counties Cross Country Championship in Cheltenham. Our students made up part of Team Cornwall and competed against 7 other counties, with the Team coming away with 3rd place overall. Year 7 students Catherine Groves and Rebecca Benney took part in the Junior Girls category, a 2.4k course.  Both girls did extremely well, Rebecca came in 16th place which meant she was the first Team Cornwall girl to finish in her category, with Catherine finishing in 27th place, becoming the 3rd   girl from Team Cornwall to complete the course. Youth Speaks 2016

On Wednesday 3rd February, the first round of the annual "Youth Speaks" public speaking competition took place at Helston Community College, organised and judged by the local Rotary club. Teams took part in both sections of the competition – Intermediate and Senior. Speech topics ranged from the need to protect our natural environment to the undeniable merits of the Cornish pasty! All the teams delivered excellent performances and gave the audience a great deal to think about.
