HCC's Readathon gets pupils reading for pleasure,raising £420 for charity and earning free books for the school To encourage its Year 7 pupils to read for pleasure, Helston Community College has just completed a very successful Readathon sponsored read. Students rose to the challenge, reading many books and raising a fantastic £420 for seriously ill children. Their achievement also earned the school free books worth £80, provided by Readathon in partnership with Scholastic Book Clubs to boost school library stocks despite increasing pressure on school budgets. Post 16 visit Royal Marine barracks

On Tuesday a group of students from yrs 12 and 13 headed to Royal Marine barracks at Stonehouse in Plymouth. These students have aspirations to be in our Armed Forces and were excited to have this opportunity. The boys were a credit to our College. The Royal Marine Captain asked if we were visiting from a Military Academy. He said that 'our students stood head and shoulders above the other Colleges'. Post 16 Students test new Space Game

Post 16 students at Helston Community College had the pleasure of hosting Goonhilly Earth Station and some Falmouth University Game Design Post Graduates who came to test a space game that they have co-designed. The students had to play the game in teams to see if it was educational, accurate and playable and gave critique after each session. Active Plus run Field Craft course

During the Easter holiday students from HCC took part in a Field Craft course, run by Active Plus, at a local farm. It was a great day out supported by volunteers and staff with lots of team activities, excellent instruction and there was much camaraderie between the young people and their instructors. This is a 28 week project funded by Cornwall Glass and Glazing, run by Active Plus and supported by Helston Phoenix Project.  The course teaches young people team building skills, personal safety, anger management and motivational skills. Students raise money for Helston defibrillator

In memory of her stepdad Andrew Oliver, Post 16 Student Abbi Hines arranged a 'wear a check shirt day' on Friday 24th April, to raise money for a town defibrillator. At least 100 Post 16 students got involved and a grand total of £180  was raised. 'Win a Wedding' competition

Help and support Mr Milliner please! Mr Milliner and his partner have been lucky enough to be picked for The Packet 'Win a Wedding' competition and are over the moon at the opportunity. The competition starts on Wednesday 22nd April and will be going on for 6 weeks and the couple that collects the most coupons from The Packet newspaper will win the wedding. HCC student swims to success

Avid swimmer Lily Parsons Year 9 has recently taken part in the British Swimming Championships at the London Aquatic Centre. Lily was the only female competitor from Cornwall, after qualifying to compete in the Championships. She represented Plymouth Leander, where she trains twice a week, in addition to training at the Truro Swimming Club. Lily has also been offered a scholarship with Plymouth Leander but has decided she would rather stay at HCC. She took part in the 100m and 200m Butterfly events and achieved personal best times in both and qualified for the final in the 100m fly.  Speaking...

Mayoress unveils artwork produced by Post 16 student

On Saturday there was an unveiling of a large art piece in Porthleven. The piece is entitled "Porthleven 2015" a tribute to Peter Lanyon. The Mayoress of Porthleven came an officially unveiled the work by Izzy Cude Yr 13 BTEC Level 3 Art & Design. The piece will be on display at The Gue on the side of "The Sea Drift" restaurant Porthleven all summer. There was a reception then held in Sea Drift to celebrate the opening.
