HCC hosts the District Final of the National Rotary “Youth Speaks” competition.

On Monday 10th February 2014, Helston Community College hosted the District Final of the National Rotary "Youth Speaks" competition. This was a highly rigorous, demanding competition as each team taking part had already successfully won the Intermediate or Senior category first round in their respective schools. The topics of the speeches ranged from the inflated wages of footballers to the new high-speed train to age-related laws. Each speaker was required to talk on their chosen topic for six minutes, yet managed to hold the attention of their audience very successfully, with some speeches being particularly amusing and entertaining. Second stage success for Year 10 Student

After successfully winning the first round of the Rotary Chef competition, Year 10 student Becky Care went on to the Plymouth and Cornwall district final held at Richard Lander School. Becky cooked duck with a plum sauce and a chickpea tagine and for dessert a chocolate soufflé. After much consideration the judges announced Becky as the winner. She was awarded  Argos vouchers and one of the Judges (who is also a chef) has offered Becky the chance to go and work with him in his kitchen, in preparation for the next part of the competition. The Big Cake Show

Year 10 student Jessica Marie Woods recently took part in The BIG School Cake Challenge. She was baking against students from other Cornish Schools  who were all given the brief to create a extravagant bake within a budget of just £5.00. The creations were judged by chef Henry from Amelies in Porthleven. Jessica baked a glazed doughnut with a caramel filling and was awarded joint first place. Jessica  Marie will now go on to the semi finals to be held at St Peter’s school in Exeter on the 28th February....

Cornwall Cross Country Championships

A number of our students recently took part in the Cornwall Schools Cross Country Championships,  many returning with medals and trophies. One of the first HCC winners of the day was Tom Slattery, who was the runaway winner in the Senior and Intermediate race; winning by a huge  margin of one minute 38 seconds which proved to be the biggest of the day. He was followed by fellow team mate Kyle Woodhouse in second place. 'Twelfth Night Production'

We wanted to give our talented Post 16s a challenge so a jazz musical version of Twelfth Night' seemed just the ticket. With Mr Parker onboard to make the music happen we were able to power on ahead working on the comedy, several storylines and choreography.  The idea to set the audience area out as a jazz club was to suit the era and mood of the play and the bar proved popular with the audience! Rotary Chef Competition

Students were asked to make a two course meal in an hour and a half, for two people, costing less than £10.  It was then over to the judges who had the difficult challenge to choose the top three. After much consideration the three students were chosen, they were, in 3rd place Megan Jones, Carmen Muldoon 2nd place and 1st place went to Becky Care. Rotary Youth Speaks Competition

                  This year five teams took part in the first round of this annual competition. Teams spoke on an array of topics including change, idols and obesity. After much deliberation the winning intermediate team were Year 9 students Tamsin Ford, Georgia Waddell and Rosanna Harrington, who spoke on the subject ‘Obesity’ and the winning Junior team were Year 11 students  Holly Bardell, Rosa Higgs and Milly who spoke on the topic ‘Age’. Dyspraxia and Me

Ex student Abi Hocking returned to College to talk to students about her experience of living with dyspraxia.    She spoke openly about how she has achieved her goals and not let Dyspraxia stand in her way. With this determination Abi ended up achieving 11 GCSE’S (A* - C).  She then carried on her studies at HCC, successfully gaining a place at her first choice University to study BA (Hons) in History last year. Surfs Up!

As part of his Product Design A2 coursework, Joss chose to design and make a hollow wooden surfboard, similar in concept to an aircraft wing. Joss  worked tirelessly for the last three months to manufacture a quite beautiful surfboard, it just oozes class and craftsmanship.  He fully utilised all facilities of the technology workshop ( and the technical skills of Mr Trimble and Mr Tatham) which has resulted in a near flawless surfboard. Post 16 student wins place at Lafayette College on Sutton Trust US University Programme.

Leo Mackenzie, who is completing his A-Levels at Helston Community College has won a place and a financial aid package, in addition to the Marquis Scholarship, to study at Lafayette College, after participating on the Sutton Trust’s US Programme run in partnership with the US-UK Fulbright Commission. Last summer, Leo was one of 150 students selected for a summer school in the US at either Yale University or the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), spending a week living on campus and visiting a number of other American universities.
