Remembrance Festival experience for HCC student

This weekend on the 8th November 2014 I had the privilege of carrying the Helston and Lizard, HMS Heroes Standard at the Royal Albert Hall as part of the Festival of Remembrance in front of the Queen and many dignitaries. It was a long day, starting with my arrival at the Hall at 6:45am, where I met five other HMS Heroes Standard bearers.  The National, Plymouth, Yorkshire, London and Scotland’s Standards were all present. A special assembly has taken place at HCC

Monday Morning briefing at Helston Community College Sixth Form was a special commemorative talk in conjunction with this year’s remembrance. We were privileged to have present, guest speakers invited in by staff member Natalie Williams.  The guests included ex Army serviceman, Chaz Wenmoth who now tirelessly works for The Royal British Legion. He spoke passionately to the Sixth Form students about how The Legion helps more people than ever before and the desperate need for younger volunteers to help with the poppy appeal. HCC runners triumphant at the Peninsula Secondary Cross Country Event

Four students from Helston Community College have come away with a selection of individual medals, as well as an team trophy after taking part in the Peninsula Secondary Cross Country Event at Redruth School. The students were competing against other local schools on a 2600m course. The conditions were wet underfoot due to the rain which had fallen in the morning, but in the afternoon the clouds lifted and it was lovely conditions for cross-country, just a little cold for those supporting. Year 11 to join his fellow cadets at the Royal Albert Hall

HCC student Tom Row has been selected along with 13 fellow cadets to represent the South West at the Remembrance Day parade and the Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall. "I will have the honour of representing the whole of the South West area, which consists of at least 1,200 cadets, at the Remembrance Day 2014 parade at the Cenotaph in London.  I was invited to do this because my unit competed in the 2014 unarmed drill competition which involved 600 cadets and we were placed first at nationals!"      Tom Row...

Royal Navy Scholarship for Post 16 student

Congratulations to Post 16 student Reece Greig on being awarded a Royal Navy Scholarship and Reserve Place Competition Award. In November Reece was invited to attend an Admiralty Interview Board (AIB) at HMS Sultan for a two day selection for Officer training. He was up against a number of other candidates and knowing only a small percentage would succeed he pushed himself to the limits to prove he was an ideal candidate. HCC County Champions

The first win for HCC was on Tuesday 14th October, when the Year 11 Rugby team won the county ten a side tournament, organised by the Army. The boys had wins over Newquay Tretherras and Brannal Schools in the pool stages before beating Redruth in the semi finals, and winning a close final 12-5 against Pool school. Then it was the girls turn on Thursday, when they competed in the U16 girls hockey tournament, which was held at Richard Lander School. Friday afternoon saw a visit to Helston Community College from The Royal Naval WONS ( Warrant Officer Of Naval Service ) Steve Cass.  As an ex student of Helston Community College, Steve was drafted in by the Sixth Form Work Experience Co ordinator; Natalie Williams to give some potential Naval recruits a real insight into The Royal Navy and the interesting, dynamic career opportunities that the Navy can offer. Year 8 pupils running to support orphanage in Kenya

After hearing of the Kisumu Orphanage's plight, four Year 8 girls Lowenna Wearne, Freya Tatham, Beth Davies  and Pepper Robertson decided they would like to support the Kisumu community by running the Camel Trail, Wadebridge to Padstow route on the 26th October. The Kisumu Children's trust run the orphanage, and are dedicated to improving the lives of some of Kenya's poorest children.  They support them by having a children's home, support for children within the home and community development projects.  Their mission is to help those in greatest need to love and care, raise them in a Christian environment, educate...
