Venus Flower' Dance Project

                    The 'Venus Flower' Dance Project was a collaboration between Cscape Dance Company, Dance Republic 2 and Falmouth University. Helston Community College was invited to send some of their talented dancers to work with professional dancers on a site specific dance piece. The young dancers became part of the 100 Company of young, professional and older dancers performing in Trebah Gardens in the Summer. Year 11 HCC student is budding film maker

Year 11 Chris Ivill has recently created his own version of Sherlock Holmes, telling the tale of the young sleuth attending Helston Community College in modern times. He enlisted fellow students to star as actors, extras and help with his production.  His dog Molly also stars as the detective’s pet. The film has been shot at Helston Community College, Helston Railway and at locations around the town. Chris began writing the script in May 2012 and started shooting in March of this year. Post 16 RNLI Fundraiser

There was a nautical theme to a fundraising event in Helston recently when a group of HCC students pushed the boat out in support of the RNLI. As part of the Event Management unit in her Travel and Tourism course, Sophie Leonard decided to arrange a fundraiser day with the help of her fellow students. This year Helston Community College Duke of Edinburgh Gold participants have visited St James’s Palace on numerous occasions to receive their Gold Awards from Prince Philip or Prince Edward. The most recent group of participants had the privilege of attending the 500th Gold Award Presentation ceremony and received their well earned Duke of Edinburgh Award in the presence of HRH the Duke of Edinburgh. Last Friday Eleanor Harding won the Cornwall ‘Young Coach of the Year’ Award for her work as a rugby coach in the College and Community.   Eleanor is a real ambassador for the College and staff were delighted to see this recognised at the glittering awards evening which took place at the Headland Hotel in Newquay; organised by the Cornwall Sports Partnership. Success for College Show Jumping Team

Last Sunday Helston Community College entered two recently reformed Show Jumping teams in a competition at Resparveth Equestrian Centre, Grampound Road, which was hosted by the Western Branch Pony Club. The teams were very grateful for the huge welcome they received. Although the elements were against all riders of the twelve Secondary Schools competing this didn’t reflect in their determination, commitment and professionalism. Turner Prize winner Simon Starling visits Helston Community College

Artist Simon Starling, winner of the 2005 Turner Prize, visited Helston Community College last week to talk to students on the A-level and BTEC Art and Design courses. The visit was arranged by Teresa Gleadowe, Chair of the Helston-based Cornubian Arts & Science Trust (CAST) and organiser of The Cornwall Workshop, a residential workshop held at Kestle Barton near Helford.  The workshop at Kestle Barton was led by Simon Starling and involved British and international artists and curators working together for a week. Trip of a Lifetime

    Twenty six Post 16 students from Helston Community College have taken part in a trip of a lifetime.  As part of their Geology and Geography A-Level classes the students travelled to Iceland where they were able to get up and close to the volcanic and glacial landscapes, both of which are major components of their academic study.
