Year 12 student wins prestigious award

On Thursday the 2nd October the College was again asked to attend the South West Apprentice of the year awards at the prestigious St Mellion International Resort in Saltash. This year's nominee was Robert Carter who won the Young Achiever of the Year Award which was sponsored by Cornwall Housing. Deputy Head Teacher Mr Wayne Jenkins read a citation; afterwards Robert was presented with the award from one of the companies' representatives. College’s Community Open Evening is a great success.

With a new year arrived and with a new Head Teacher at the helm,  the College opened its doors for its annual Community Open Evening  last week. The North Site Hall was packed for  Mrs Bryant's  key note addresses, which also included  speeches by  Head Boy; Blake Brown and  Head Girl; Francesca Wells. During the evening, visitors were shown around  the College by our new Year 7 students. Big Lottery Awards for All- Helston Young People 'it’s all about you!’

At the end of July the Helston Phoenix Project were informed that they had been awarded their third successful award of £9, 105. 00 from the Big Lottery Awards for All. The third one week project for the young people of Helston ran during the August holiday. The team, mentors, and volunteers are all trained in Safeguarding, Confidentially and Cornwall Fire and Rescue Health and Safety Procedures prior to the activity. Coffee and Cake for Charity

There was time for some truly scrumptious cakes on Friday at the Helston College Post 16 Centre.  Siobhan Owen in year 12, organised The Macmillan Coffee morning with some help from staff member Natalie Williams.  Lots of generous Post 16 students baked a variety of cakes and biscuits to help Siobhan raise a total of £120.05. The Sixth Form students are always keen to support any fundraising and welcomed the chance to show off their baking prowess. Primary School pupils visit the Construction Department at HCC

Red Class from Halwin School visited Helston Community College recently as part of their Construction Project.  The aim of the visit was to see and have a go at construction activities.  The children were shown by Year 13 Construction students how to mix mortar and were also shown how to build cavity walls in brick and block. After a tour of the site and a tea break, they had a go themselves and worked with plenty of enthusiasm, using up all the allocated bricks and mortar very quickly.  Even the staff and helpers all joined in to have a go...

Students are celebrating another set of top results

Students at Helston Community College are celebrating another set of top results, with more than ever receiving A* and A grades and the average grade received now being close to a B.  More than three quarters of A-level grades awarded were C or better, with a significant number of students achieving the top grade of A* and progressing to Russell Group Universities, including 4 Oxbridge places. New School Council Members are elected

Throughout the year, a number of the Trust schools have worked together to prepare for the Trust's first ever joint summer fair, to raise money for good causes.  A poetry competition has also been run in each of the Trust schools, to commemorate those who died and served in the First World War, which broke out 100 years ago. Sports Award Evening

Congratulations to all the winners at this year’s Sports Awards Evening.  Prizes were awarded to students for elite performance as well as individual talent in Rugby, Hockey, Netball, Volleyball and Football. At the end of the evening special cups were given out, including the Dr McGovern Award – Aspiration through Sport  which was awarded to Eleanor Harding for her dedication to Rugby and Liam Tanner was the winner of the Ian Rogers Cup –Outstanding Commitment  (mainly football, rugby, athletics and cricket).  At the end of the evening Dr McGovern was presented a collage of Sporting Achievements from the PE Staff....

Exciting next stage for student's dancing career

Year 8 Student to join the Exeter Youth Dance Academy (YDA) Maea Morgan is a year 8 student who has recently auditioned for the Exeter Centre for Advanced Dance Training. Over 100 young dancers auditioned for a very few places and Maea has been successfully offered a place starting in September. The panel were 'really impressed with the standard' of her dancing.  The YDA is one of nine Centres for Advanced Training (CAT) across the country.
