Phoenix Project helps 100 teens in two years

More than 100 young people have been helped by the Phoenix Project.  The mentoring project is based at the Helston Fire Station for a few hours each week, as well as during the school holidays for a wide group of young people. The project works closely with the National Trust, RNAS Culdrose, Active Plus, the Police and the Falmouth School of Sailing.  Most recently the young people have spent time working on the maintenance of the monument at the foot of Coinagehall Street and also building footpaths on the Penrose estate. Helston Community College student is Chelsea FC Mascot

Ciaran Barker, a lifetime member of the Cornish Blues Chelsea Supporters Club and Culdrose Hawks U13 Captain, was invited to become a Chelsea FC mascot for the day for their match against Swindon Town FC, at Swindon on the 24th September. Ciaran began his day with a tour of the grounds and was given a pre-match briefing by Marc Cooper the Swindon Manager.  He was then invited into the Chelsea dressing room where he was able to meet all the Chelsea squad, including John Terry the Captain of the club and former England International Captain.  He was able to take...

Helston & Lizard Foodbank receive cheque

David Williams receives a cheque from Assistant Headteacher David Lewis on behalf of the Mustard Seed Charity and the Helston & Lizard Foodbank. Students at Helston Community College have raised £779.25 as well as donating food.  The local charity is being supported by children and young people across the area as part of the joint work being done through the Helston & Lizard Co-operative Education Trust. The Helston & Lizard Foodbank, which can be found at the Open Door Café, 14 Wendron Street, Helston, aims to provide 3 days’ worth of non-perishable food to help those experiencing short term...

There was a warm welcome for two ex students who are currently training with the Royal Marines.    They gave a valuable, informative and aspirational talk to Post 16 students about life in the Royal Marines. Dan Wake and Tom Wallis (previously Head Boy) both studied A Levels and went on to gain University Degrees before deciding to join the Royal Marines as Officer candidates. Students welcome visitor from the University of Oxford

During his visit Ashley worked with the College's higher achieving students in Year 11 and Post 16 delivering two sessions.  The first of these was preparing hopeful Year 13 students for interview and entrance tests.  He then talked to approximately fifty students from Years 11 and 12 to dispel some of the myths surrounding both Oxford and Cambridge Universities and encouraged students to apply. Student members of the Helston Community College Council and their teacher Ms Marsden recently attended the 2013 'Young Peoples Question Time' in New County Hall, Truro. They were given the opportunity to question local MP's and County Councillors on a variety of topics including Youth Employment and Opportunities, Positive Image of Young People and Transport. MP's George Eustice and Dan Rogerson, Cllr John Wood, Chair of the Council and Cornwall Members for the Youth Parliament (MYP's), amongst others, were responding to questions raised. University of Cambridge Chemistry Challenge

The challenge comprises a  written paper at University level and is designed to challenge the very brightest students. Nationally, more than 6,200 students enter the challenge and the best performers are awarded a Gold, Silver or Copper Award. All five students from HCC who took the exam gained an Award. The annual Open Evening was held on the 18th September and several hundred visitors were welcomed in to get a flavour of the life and work of the College. Judging by the number of smiles on the faces of our guests, both young and old, the event was a great success.
