TRUST STATUS AN HISTORIC MOMENT FOR THE COLLEGE IS ANNOUNCED.
On September the first the Helston and Lizard Peninsula Education Trust will be the official title that will refer to the historic decision by the Governors of Helston Community College.
After over a year of consultation between staff, students, parents and governors the historic decision was made to become a charitable foundation trust.
The trust body will include representatives of the College’s new partners, which include University College Falmouth, the Truro Diocesan Education Board, Cornwall and Devon Connexions and Truro College. It is also hoped that nPower and Cornwall College will join as partners as well.
Dr. McGovern said, “In one sense things won’t change enormously, but what will happen is that a greater range of opportunities will be provided by linking with these partners”.
The long-term plan is to open up possibilities for children, young people and families to take part in programmed activities that are not available at present.
It also provides Helston and The Lizard with strategic partners who operate on the national stage and will ensure our needs are not overlooked. Another advantage is the closer links which have already been established with University College Falmouth, including sharing staff and benefiting from “enrichment” courses.
The College looks forward to working with Mullion School, which provides further education for 11 to 16 year olds on the peninsula. Although Mullion had decided not to seek foundation status, the two schools would continue to work together and benefit from each other’s strengths.
This will set in place the standard of education for Helston and the surrounding area for the foreseeable future, and is a decision on a par with that made in 1911 when Helston made educational history after it became the first town in Cornwall to have a secondary school that was established at that time in Penrose Road.
OUR JAZZ ORCHESTRA ARE THE BEST IN THE COUNTRY!
Congratulations to our superb Helston School Jazz Orchestra, who returned to Helston recently from the national final of the National Concert Band Festival in Cardiff - the proud winners of a Gold Award and two individual soloist awards. The band, also Gold Award winners last year, impressed the adjudicators with their varied programme featuring all sections of the band. Two soloists received special mention and were awarded Outstanding Soloist Awards - Caitlin Strike for her moving Flugel Horn solo “When Dreams Come True” and Claire-Louise Auguste for the flute solo in Chick Corea’s classic “Spain”. Claire-Louise was also the featured vocalist in the well known ballad “That Ole’ Devil Called Love”.
The band were accompanied on the trip by friends and supporters and Musical Director Clive King thanked all the musicians for their hard work in preparing for the festival - including the extra rehearsals held during the Easter holidays.
The band have a busy summer season ahead playing in different venues, and can next be seen playing at the harbourside in Porthleven on bank holiday Monday May 4th, and they will be playing a concert at the Minack Theatre on Sunday May 17th which promises to be a very special event.
