“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” - Nelson Mandela
At Helston Community College, our Citizenship Programme gives students regular opportunities to develop their understanding of the world around them and their role within wider society. Delivered through dedicated tutor time, the programme provides a space for students to explore current events, important national and global issues and the values that underpin life in modern Britain.
Students engage with a wide range of topics, including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance, rights and responsibilities, equality and diversity. British Values are embedded throughout the programme, helping students to understand not only what these values mean, but how they apply to everyday life and the choices they make.
A key focus of the programme is keeping students informed about what is happening in the world. Through age-appropriate discussions and activities, students consider current affairs and are encouraged to ask questions, think critically and consider different perspectives. This helps them to develop their ability to distinguish fact from opinion, challenge misinformation and engage respectfully with views that may differ from their own.
The programme also provides opportunities for students to explore issues affecting their local community, the UK and the wider world. Students consider how decisions made by individuals, communities and governments can impact people's lives, and develop an understanding of how they can contribute positively to society.
Citizenship also supports students in developing important personal qualities such as confidence, empathy, respect, resilience and responsibility. Students are encouraged to have informed discussions, listen to others, express their opinions appropriately and recognise the importance of playing an active role in their community.
Through our Citizenship Programme, we aim to ensure that students leave Helston Community College with a strong understanding of their rights and responsibilities, an awareness of the world around them and the confidence to participate positively in society.
