At Helston Community College, students develop their understanding of healthy relationships, consent, respect and personal responsibility throughout their secondary education. Lessons are carefully designed to help students understand the importance of kindness, communication, boundaries and mutual respect as they develop relationships and prepare for adulthood.
Students learn how to recognise the characteristics of healthy and respectful relationships, identify positive role models and understand how relationships can change over time. They also explore how media and online content can influence attitudes and expectations, and develop the confidence to challenge harmful stereotypes, behaviours and attitudes they may encounter.

What does our students learn in RSE? |
| Year 7 - Spring Term | Students develop an understanding of identity, rights, respect and responsibility, learning how to challenge prejudice and discrimination, respond to bullying and support others. |
| Year 7 - Summer Term | Students learn about healthy relationships, including respect, trust and communication, while exploring how media can influence our attitudes and expectations around relationships. |
| Year 8 - Spring Term | Students explore healthy relationships, identity and consent, while developing the knowledge and skills to communicate respectfully and stay safe both online and offline. |
| Year 8 - Summer Term | Students explore the impact of influence while developing their understanding of identity, equality and discrimination, including how to challenge racism and prejudice and promote respect for others. |
| Year 9 - Spring Term | Students explore different family structures, home safety and the causes of family conflict, developing an understanding of how to seek support and help others. |
| Year 9 - Summer Term | Students explore readiness, consent, contraception and sexual health, while considering the consequences of unsafe sex and the influence of media on expectations around sexual relationships |
| Year 10 - Tutor time & Extended assemblies | Providing students with opportunities to explore important topics in an engaging and age-appropriate way. Students develop their understanding of healthy relationships, consent, respect, personal safety and informed decision-making, supporting them to navigate relationships confidently and responsibly as they prepare for adulthood. |
| Year 11 - Autumn Term | Students explore sexual health, contraception, STI prevention, pregnancy and parenthood, alongside the impact of media on body image and making informed choices around cosmetic procedures. |
| Year 11 - Spring Term | Students explore honest communication, healthy long-term relationships and respectful intimacy, while learning to recognise controlling behaviour, make safe decisions and understand how relationships can be repaired when difficulties arise. |
Our RSE curriculum aims to ensure that students have the knowledge, skills and confidence to make informed, safe and respectful choices in their relationships and wider lives.
Parents and careers have the right to withdraw their child from the lessons that are based on Relationships and Sex Education unless this is within three terms of your child turning 16. Contact our PSHE Subject lead as soon as possible if you want to withdraw your child from these lessons.
