Cornwall and South West Junior Chef of the Year 2024

23rd April 2024

Further information and the entry form can be found on our website at https://www.southwestchef.co.uk/the-competition/junior-chef/

As always, this is open to young cooks aged 11-16 and aims to help them to build their confidence in the kitchen and learn new skills. Young cooks will compete for the title in their own county initially and county winners will go on to meet at the South West final.

Entries can now be submitted by sending us a recipe for a main course dish to serve two people using principally locally grown/produced ingredients. Based on the recipes submitted, our judges will select competitors in each of the six counties of the South West who will be invited to prepare their dish for the judges in 90 minutes at their county’s catering college.

The next round for Cornwall’s young cooks will take place on Friday 28 June at Cornwall College, Camborne, where one winner will be crowned Cornwall Junior Chef of the Year and invited to compete in the South West overall final in October. The winner will be offered the opportunity to work with one of our judges to develop and enhance their dish in preparation for the final, allowing them to learn new skills and experience life in a working kitchen.

Our judges at the Cornwall Junior Chef competition will be:
• Pete Murt - Head Chef, Rick Stein’s Seafood Restaurant, Padstow
• Aiden Blakely-May - Sous Chef, The Ugly Butterfly, Carbis Bay, St Ives
• Clyde Conellan - Chef Lecturer, Cornwall College

Cooking is scheduled to begin at 2.45 pm.

All six South West finalists will also be invited to take part in the regional final of the Springboard FutureChef competition https://futurechef.uk.net/ in January 2025 (bypassing the school and county heats) to compete for a place in their national final.
