Post 16 Geology Field Trip

22nd January 2019

The Year 12 and 13 Geology students visited the United Downs Geothermal Drilling Project this week. The students were hosted by the Project Geologist Lucy Cotton who has recently delivered assemblies in the School. The project involves drilling the deepest borehole in the UK into the Carmellenis Granite to a depth of 4500 metres.  Water will be pumped from the drill holes and the extracted heat will be used to supply a demonstration power plant. If successful this source of zero-carbon energy could generate electricity for up to 3,000 homes. The students learned about the history of the project, the geology of the area and the findings from the drilling to date. They also learned about careers in geology, the operation of the land-mark drill rig and the overall logistics surrounding the EU funded project.
