Geology Trip.

20th December 2019

This week our A-Level Geologists visited Camborne School of Mines at Penryn Campus to attend a talk by Dr Kate Moore about the importance of minerals in society, and how mining is set to increase with the growing demand for metals in green technologies.  A focus was to learn about the advances in sustainable mining.

During the course of the day, the students studied the mineral and fossil collections and modelled landscape changes using the sand simulator.  They also took part in a practical lesson, studying the properties of minerals in thin sections of mantle rock using petrographic microscopes.

The university visit provided the students with a flavour of the cutting-edge research taking place in Cornwall, and highlighted that Cornwall is continuing to lead innovation in world mining.  Many thanks to all the staff at Camborne School of Mines for facilitating our visit.
