Helston Community College Achieves Eco-Schools Green Flag Award

Helston Community College has been awarded an Eco-Schools Green Flag Award! This is in recognition of the changes that have been made to reduce the carbon footprint and improve the biodiversity and sustainability of the college.

Students have been involved in a range of activities throughout the academic year, including: litter picks; creating a vegetable garden; creating a pond area; planting two wildflower meadows; planting 350 trees, including a small orchard; running a Terracycle programme to reduce stationery waste; working in the community with The National Trust to clear invasive Himalayan balsam from the River Cober and to clear litter from Penrose Walks; cleaning marine litter from local beaches; and planting a Jubilee tree as part of The Queen’s Green Canopy Project.

Some students have been working towards awards that recognise their efforts to improve the environment and have achieved a Bronze, Silver or Gold Eco-Volunteer Award. Six Year Eight students have also achieved their John Muir Discover Award for Conservation, having completed 25 hours of volunteering for the environment. Huge congratulations to these students.

The college will continue to work hard to reduce its impact on the environment, with a focus on energy and waste next academic year.

Well done to all students and staff involved in helping the college to achieve this Eco-Schools Green Flag Award!
