Faraday Challenge Days

25th April 2022

The IET Faraday Challenge Days 2021/22

Helston Community College were delighted to host this year’s Faraday Challenge Day run by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) who have been working for many years to encourage more young people to engage in the STEM agenda and to consider engineering as a possible career path.

The IET Faraday Challenge Days are cross-curricular activity days covering Science, Design and Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). They are held at schools, organisations and universities around the UK and have proved to be enormously popular with teachers and students alike. It is through its charitable arm of the IET that we are able to provide the Faraday Challenge Days at no charge to UK schools.

The Faraday Challenge Days give students the opportunity to research, design and make solutions to genuinely tough engineering problems. The event was run by STEM professionals. It is an unbeatable opportunity to switch students on to the subject.

Teams were made up of six Year 8 students. The two Helston teams were joined by teams Mullion and Penryn. The competition was fierce throughout the day with Mullion hedging forward to take the first place spot. As winners of the trophy for their school they also gain a place on the national league table. The top teams from across the UK will get to go through to the National Final at the end of the season to compete for a cash prize of up to £1,000 for their school to spend on STEM activities.

Well done to all students who took part they all demonstrated excellent teamwork and innovation.
Congratulations to Mullion and good luck in the National table!
