Y7 Chemistry Lecture by Tim Harrison.

4th July 2019

Bristol University Professor, Tim Harrison FRSC, CChem, MRSSAf, MRSB visited Helston Community College on Tuesday where he presented on the Chemistry of the air. He captivated his audience with mini explosions, liquid nitrogen and carefully constructed discussion on the earth’s atmosphere. He wisely navigated some of the misconceptions about the gases of our atmosphere that link nicely to our Y7 syllabus in science. Freezing point and melting point, energy transfer, physical and chemical change were all on the table for discussion. There are many demonstrations that held the Y7 students in rapture, perhaps the exploding hydrogen balloon, liquid nitrogen at -196 degrees Celsius or the Peppa Pig self-inflating balloon!

The presentation was delivered with skill, humour and a genuine understanding of the level of the audience on the day. We are very grateful that Tim could visit us in Cornwall as we know that events like this can inspire students to one day become our amazing scientists of the future. After all global warming and the atmosphere is already a very topical issue.
