South West Junior Chef of the Year 2022

We are delighted to inform you of the return of South West Junior Chef of the Year in 2022.  After being forced to cancel the competition for the last two years due to the pandemic, we are very excited to be able to offer this opportunity to the young cooks of the South West again this year.

This competition aims to help young cooks build their confidence in the kitchen and enables them to demonstrate their skills to some of the region’s leading chefs.  Cooks aged 11-16 will compete for the title in their own county initially and county winners will go on to meet at the South West final.

Entrants are asked to submit a recipe for a main course dish to serve two, using principally locally grown and produced ingredients.  Selected entrants will be invited to prepare their dish for our judges in 90 minutes at a catering college in their own county during mid-late June and the winner in each county will go on to compete for the title of South West Junior Chef of the Year in October.

All county winners will be offered mentoring with one of our esteemed judges, providing them with an opportunity to enhance their dish, develop their skills and gain valuable experience of a commercial kitchen, in advance of the overall final.


Entries close: Wednesday 25th May 2022


  • County finals will take place between 14th and 29th June on weekday afternoons in catering colleges in each county.  The date in your county is shown on the attached file.
  • The South West final will be held on a Saturday in early October (date to be confirmed) at Exeter College in Devon.
  • Competitors must be aged 11-16 and still at school in year 11 or below on the date of the South West final.


South West Chef of the Year was established 19 years ago and is organised by Michelin starred chef, Michael Caines MBE, and Julie Harvey of Presteign Marketing as a not-for-profit enterprise.  The competition aims to recognise the talent of chefs and amateur cooks around the South West, to provide a platform from which they can strive to achieve their ambitions and to help to raise the profile of the South West as a region of culinary excellence.
