Helston Community College Students Complete Community Beach-Clean

1st May 2022

Helston Community College Students in Year Eight, Working Towards their John Muir Award for Conservation, Complete a Beach Clean at Porthoustock.

Some Year Eight Students have been working towards their John Muir Award for conservation during this academic year. They have almost completed 25 hours of volunteering and personal development, working on improving biodiversity in the College grounds, as well as understanding how to help keep our coasts and rivers clean.

On April 4th 2022, they worked with Vertical Blue Adventures from Porthleven to complete some wildlife studies along the coast to see what species were present. They kayaked to a secluded beach and carried out a beach clean and then picked up more waste from Porthoustock Beach itself. The students learned about some of the threats to marine wildlife and how they can help protect it.

The students have been enabled to complete their John Muir Award due to a grant from The Blue Spark Foundation which is a registered charity that:

Supports the education and development of children and young people by providing grants for educational, cultural, sporting and other projects.’
